28th of February saw us heading to the sunny far north to compete in the General Cable Great Kiwi Game Fishing competition with Bruce & Matt Smith aboard the legendary Striker. Day one was spent rolling around in a choppy, swelly sea until around 3.00pm…..WHAM!!!! a 137kg striped marlin decided to do battle with Grant Brockett in the game chair. Due to expert angling skills and smooth teamwork from the crew, consisting of Peter Cairns, Tony Feek, Joel Page & Peter Simpson the fish was soon subdued and boated (with a little bit of help from the skipper & deckie of course!) This was not only to be the prizewinning fish of the competition, but also the biggest stripey weighed in at the Bay Of Islands Swordfish Club this year!!
Day two in much more favourable conditions, an early morning hook-up for Joel Page saw a magnificent stripey of around 120kg tagged and released. Way to go Joel!!
Thanks General Cable and Powerbase for a very well-run event can’t wait for the next one!
